Sustainable Defense Financing and a New Stage of Development for Lithuania's Defense Industry

The historic decision by the State Defense Council to allocate up to 6% of GDP annually for defense starting next year marks a new stage in strengthening Lithuania's national security and opens significant opportunities for the country's defense industry. Ensuring sustainable financing not only enhances our defense capabilities but also creates conditions for industry growth, innovation development, and active integration into global supply chains.

"The growth of investments will enable Lithuania to develop modern solutions—from high technologies such as autonomous systems and cybersecurity tools to the production of high-quality military equipment. For instance, this could involve local manufacturers participating in the creation and supply of unmanned aerial vehicles, armored vehicles, or advanced surveillance systems.

Furthermore, by strengthening cooperation with international partners, Lithuanian companies will have the opportunity to become integral participants in global supply chains, providing components or solutions for NATO and other allied armed forces' projects. This will contribute not only to the country's economic growth but also to the defense capabilities of our allies," said Vaidas Sabaliauskas, Director of the Lithuanian Defense and Security Industry Association.

The defense industry in Lithuania will also become an important driver of the knowledge economy, promoting research and experimental development (R&D) projects and creating highly qualified jobs.

According to the association's director, all of this will enhance Lithuania's position as a reliable partner and an equal player in the international defense ecosystem. Along with this decision, Lithuania's defense industry will undoubtedly enter a new stage of development—stronger, more sustainable, and more innovation-focused.
