MINE DAY 2025 – Overview

Today, the "Mine Day" event was held at the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania, aiming to present the achievements of the Lithuanian defense industry in mine development to the Ministry of National Defense and the Lithuanian Armed Forces, provide more insight into this field, and encourage the development of domestically produced mines.
Political and Strategic Decisions
Minister of National Defense Dovilė Šakalienė, who attended the event, emphasized that Lithuania is considering withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention, which restricts the use of anti-personnel mines. Additionally, the need to create a more favorable environment for the defense industry and promote local production was highlighted.
A clear commitment was expressed to procure Lithuanian-made mines if they meet the operational requirements of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. This sends a strong signal to the country’s defense industry companies—local production could receive real support and procurement orders.
Industrial Achievements and Future Plans
During the event, Lithuanian defense industry companies showcased:
Various types of mines and explosive devices;
Explosives designed for drones;
Grenade prototypes and specialized sensors for mine detection and activation.
The Ministry of National Defense plans to finalize operational requirements and technical specifications for mines within the next month and expects concrete procurement proposals from the industry within a year.
Regulatory Challenges and Necessary Changes
One of the main challenges in this process is that Lithuania does not produce the necessary explosives, and their import and trade are strictly prohibited. Considering the current geopolitical situation and emerging threats, this legal barrier is expected to be reviewed and adjusted to support local businesses.
Furthermore, a commitment was made to assess and establish proportionate requirements for components used in the mine development and manufacturing process, improving relevant regulations concerning the production of weapons and their components.
Strategic Importance
Events like "Mine Day" not only strengthen cooperation between the military and industry but also drive technological innovations that could become an integral part of Lithuania's defense strategy.
