Specific defence industry opportunities have been presented
We met with H.E. President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda and Minister of Economy and Innovation Lukas Savickas to discuss the untapped potential of the state to strengthen national defence financing and promote greater engagement of Lithuanian businesses.
This was an important discussion attended by leaders of Lithuanian business associations and confederations, with a special focus on the role of the national industry. Egidijus Skuzinskas, Chairman of the Board of the Lithuanian Defence and Security Industry Association (LDSIA), presented specific opportunities for the sector to contribute to the President's proposals on increasing funding through sustainable economic growth:
Empowering the Local Market: It is proposed that procurement organizations in the defence and security sectors first conduct an analysis of local market capabilities before initiating purchases. Shaping procurements under the principle "buy Lithuanian" would not only promote fair competition but also add value to the national economy.
Future Financing Model: Considering the €12 billion funding required for national defence by 2030, it is crucial to include not only initial acquisitions but also the full life-cycle costs (20–30 years) of the equipment. This approach ensures long-term, sustainable investment planning.
Involvement in Critical Infrastructure: It is essential to ensure that our defence industry is actively involved in the maintenance and development of critical infrastructure. We have real opportunities to carry out 30% of this work domestically—meaning €4 billion would remain in Lithuania, stimulating direct economic growth, creating new jobs, fostering innovation, and strengthening national security.
This is not just an economic strategy—it is an investment in Lithuania’s security, jobs, and innovations. By making the right decisions today, we can ensure that our businesses and industries become an integral part of a strong, self-reliant defence ecosystem.
